Stripping the vanilla...

To remove the seeds from a vanilla pod, first slice it in half down the length with a very sharp knife. It won't spill open, and the seeds will need to be squeezed out, either with a teaspoon or by running the back of a knife down the length, while holding one end (much like stropping a razor).
